FEATURE LIST

Everything Engram does. Including what it doesn't.

The rest of the site sells the outcome. This page is the parts. Everything below is live today unless it appears under what isn't built yet.

SYNC

Your vault, everywhere at once.

  • Real-time on every tier

Desktop, mobile, tablet, and the browser. Including Free. There is no manual-only mode and there never was.

  • 3-way merge

Nothing is silently overwritten. When two devices disagree you get a resolution UI, not a lost edit.

  • Offline queue

Edits made without a connection queue locally and replay in order when you reconnect.

  • Attachments too

Images, PDFs, audio, video, office docs. All file types on all tiers, not just markdown.

  • Awkward paths survive

Renames, deletes, deeply nested folders, and special characters, without mangling them.

  • Sync Center

Current state, pending work, manual retry, and conflict resolution, inside Obsidian.

SEARCH

Three modes, one index.

All server-side, running against a real index of your vault rather than a grep over one disk.

  • Keyword (BM25)

Real BM25 over per-chunk sparse vectors, with NFKC normalization and CJK bigram tokenization. Finds the exact string, which a semantic-only system structurally cannot.

  • Per-language stemming

Language is detected per note and routed to the matching Snowball stemmer, including non-Latin scripts. Your German compounds get a German stemmer, not an English one.

  • Semantic

Voyage AI embeddings, voyage-4-large at 1024 dimensions, stored in Qdrant with binary quantization and rescore.

  • Hybrid, by default

Keyword and semantic fused server-side with Reciprocal Rank Fusion.

  • Diversity reranking

MMR, so one long note cannot occupy every result slot.

  • Filters under encryption

Filter by frontmatter type or date range, evaluated against blind indexes so the server never needs the plaintext.

Every plan, Free included, gets keyword, semantic and hybrid search. Free searches 2,000 of your notes; paid plans search all of them. And we make no claim that our ranking beats anyone else's, because we have not measured it against anything and we are not going to assert what we cannot show.

AI ACCESS

Every AI you use, reading and writing.

  • Hosted MCP server

At mcp.engram.page, implementing the open Model Context Protocol. Not a localhost bridge, so it works with your computer closed.

  • OAuth 2.1 with DCR

Dynamic Client Registration, so clients connect without you hand-editing config or pasting long-lived secrets.

  • 21 tools, read and write

Search, read, create, update, append, patch, section edits, folders, tags, attachments, vault selection.

  • 16 documented clients

Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT (web), Cursor, Cline, Continue, Copilot, Windsurf, Gemini, Grok, Mistral, Devin, Antigravity, LobeChat, Open WebUI, OpenCode. Anything else speaking MCP works too.

CLIENTS

Read it anywhere. Edit it anywhere.

  • Web app, nothing to install

At app.engram.page. A real CodeMirror 6 editor, not a preview pane.

  • Full Obsidian rendering

Wikilinks, embeds, callouts, KaTeX math, and Mermaid diagrams, in the browser.

  • Obsidian plugin

Engram Vault Sync, in the community directory. Points at a vault you already have. MIT licensed.

  • Mobile

Obsidian mobile, plus the browser on any phone.

YOUR FILES

Plain markdown. In a folder you own.

  • The canonical copy is yours

On your disk, not in our database. If Engram disappears, the folder still opens in Obsidian, VS Code, or cat.

  • Both link syntaxes

Wikilinks and markdown links are both parsed, so links resolve whichever way you write them.

  • Open Knowledge Format

Engram reads OKF v0.1 frontmatter natively: type, title, description, resource, tags, timestamp, created. Three of those become search filters.

We do not claim OKF conformance. Conformance is a property of a bundle, not a product, and we are a minor version behind. Bundle export does not exist yet.

SECURITY

Encrypted, and honest about it.

  • Per-user encryption keys

256-bit data encryption keys, AES-256-GCM, with per-field AAD binding.

  • KMS key wrapping

In production each user's key is wrapped by AWS KMS and bound to that user by encryption context, so KMS sees the key and never the note text.

  • Paths and tags are not plaintext

Encrypted and HMAC-indexed, so filtering works without the server reading them.

  • Never sold. Never trained on.

Your notes are never training data and are never sold.

The hosted service is not end-to-end encrypted. Semantic search requires the server to read note text in order to embed it, and we will not imply otherwise. If you want the server to be unable to read your notes, self-host, where the server is yours.

SELF-HOST

The whole stack, on your hardware.

  • docker compose up

Same code, same protocols, same release as hosted. There is no crippled community build.

  • Billing bypassed entirely

No tiers, no limits, no payment integration. Free.

  • Local embeddings

Point it at Ollama with EMBED_BACKEND=ollama and no note text leaves your network. Air-gap capable.

  • Source-available

PolyForm Small Business License 1.0.0. Read every line that touches your data, run it for personal or small-business use without paying us. Source-available, not open source, and we will not call it open source.

One thing you cannot fumble: back up ENCRYPTION_MASTER_KEY. Lose it and every encrypted note is unrecoverable.

BUILD ON IT

A real API, and real invoices.

  • REST and WebSocket

Notes, folders, attachments, search, and real-time sync. Reference docs generated from the OpenAPI spec.

  • API keys are Pro-only

Free and Starter have no programmatic key. This does not affect MCP, the Obsidian plugin, or the web app, which authenticate differently and work on every tier.

  • Paddle as Merchant of Record

VAT and GST handled wherever you are. Free, Starter $7/mo, Pro $14/mo.

  • Free accounts expire

Deleted after 90 days of inactivity, with warning emails first.

NOT BUILT YET

What we don't do. Better you read it here.

  • End-to-end encryption on hosted

Structurally at odds with server-side semantic search. Self-host instead.

  • Sharing, shared vaults, team seats

Committed direction, gated on multi-recipient key wrapping. Relay is what to use in the meantime.

  • Live co-editing

    Not planned near-term.

  • Version history

Obsidian Sync has this. We do not yet.

  • Offline search

Keyword search runs server-side, so it needs a connection. There is no downloaded-notes mode.

  • OKF bundle export

The thing we most want to ship next on that front.

  • Publish

No static-site hosting of your vault.

Point it at a vault you already have.

Free tier, no card. Or see how it compares first.
